Low Carb Alcoholic Beverages

martini_1 An evening of bar hopping or just drinking with friends is never good when dieting. All alcoholic beverages contain calories and are the harder to burn. If you are conscious of the carbohydrates that you are drinking it will be easier to avoid the extra weight gain.

The reasoning behind watching your carb intake is that alcohol slows your body’s burning power of fats, carbs and calories. Alcohol is the first thing that is burnt when consumed. It is for this reason that the lower the carbs consumed, the less the body has to work to burn the calories after the alcohol. Since you will be going to sleep after drinking, your body does not all this extra energy at night.

A drinking favorite of young adults and men is beer. The reason for the infamous beer belly is because this favorite has about 150 calories per 12 ounces as well as 13 grams of carbs. Hard liquor contains calories although contain zero carbohydrates. Mixing hard alcohol (that contains 65 calories per ounce) with sugary fruit juices or sodas only increase the calories per drink. Instead of having a screwdriver or sour apple martini, ask for a regular martini on the rocks or with flavored Vodka to limit your carb intake. Another way to drink Vodka, gin, rum is with diet sodas or diet tonic. This is much easier to do at home as diet sodas are not readily available in most bars.

If you cannot go without your fruity drinks, you will be forced to count both calories and carbs. Pay attention to which juices have less carbs – an eight ounce glass of cranberry juice contains 36 grams of carbs, while pineapple juice contains 34 and orange juice has 26 grams. A great substitute for juice could be lemon or lime squirts which only contain around 2.6 grams of carbs per ounce.

In today’s stores low carb alcoholic beverages can be found, although they still contain calories. Beer is available in a low carb style. It seems that because of the lower alcohol content more beer is consumed than hard alcohol at one time. Wine seems to be the smartest alcoholic drink for a low carb dieter. It is consumed in a much slower fashion than other drinks and therefore gives the body more time to deal with it than the beer and alcohol drinkers that usually consume greater quantities in less time.

Finally, it is important that all drinks with alcohol contain calories. When out on the town, it is better to cut the carbs out and just have the alcohol calories to worry about at the end of the night. It is impossible to cut out the calories and carbs unless you cut out the drink too. Be aware of what the intake is, if an ounce of Vodka has 65 calories and a martini contains 2 and a half ounces of Vodka, it is very difficult to diet and drink. Everyone handles alcohol differently and the body burns it differently. Remember it is impossible to cut out the calories, so if you at least cut out the carbs, it is better than doing nothing.
